It was a beautiful night for a concert as The Flaming Lips, Mac DeMarco and Chappo closed out the season at The Lawn at White River State Park in Indianapolis.
Chappo opened the show setting the mood for the evening as the crowd sang along to all their favorite tunes. Lead singer Alex even came down to hug a fan before their set was through.
Next up was Mac DeMarco. Mac came on stage and made himself right at home, introducing the band and lighting a cig as he started the set with fan favorites “On the Level” followed by “Salad Days”. He continued engaging the crowd by telling stories interspersed with hits such as “This Old Dog”, “Dreams of Yesterday” and “Ode to Viceroy” before finishing the show with two rock classics, “Don’t Fear the Reaper” and “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”. He made the crowd feel like you had spent the evening in a dear friends living room and you didn’t want it to end…but the evening wasn’t over yet!
The Flaming Lips took the stage and definitely brought the party to the house! As the stage crew (dressed as superheroes) threw huge, colorful balloons into the crowd, frontman Wayne Coyne opened the show with confetti cannon blasts while singing “Race for the Prize”. The ever-changing visual scenery continued to delight with the appearance of a giant inflatable pink robot for “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1” followed by Wayne riding through the crowd on a rainbow lighted unicorn singing the new track “There Should Be Unicorns”. Audience interaction was the order of the night for the Flaming Lips as they continued to thrill the crowd with fan favorites such as “The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song”, “How”, “Are You a Hypnotist” as well as giving a nod to David Bowie with a lovely cover of “Space Oddity” They ended the evening with “Do you Realize?” and said Goodnight, leaving the crowd in a magical bliss until the next time they hit town.
